Another way of putting it is to say we are on a quest for quality.  What is quality?  Good question.  Some say it can't be defined but we know it when we see it.  The philosopher sees it in terms of essence.  Being the best being or thing you are capable of.  Some speak of utility or the intersection of form and function.  There are many approaches but generally there is universal recognition when quality is present.
